Years examining
Marking A Level Economics scripts and supervising new examiners through the summer series.
A Level Economics
One to one lessons, online over Zoom or face to face at my home in Croydon, for students sitting A Level Economics with AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR or Cambridge International. I have marked these papers since 2008.
What we work on
Students who are losing marks almost never lose them evenly. Working out which of the four is the problem, and treating that one, is the fastest way to move a grade.
Definitions, diagrams and the models themselves. Usually the part students are most confident about, and the smallest share of the marks at A Level.
Using the right model on the context in front of you. Most lost marks at this stage come from answering a general question instead of the one on the paper.
Chains of reasoning that actually connect. We practise building an argument step by step rather than asserting a conclusion and hoping.
The highest-value marks and the ones most often left on the table. Judgement, weighing, and saying what it depends on, done to a structure that works under time pressure.
Boards and papers
Every board asks for something slightly different, and the differences are where marks go missing. My examining work covers all four, so lessons are built around the papers in front of the student rather than economics in general.
Senior examiner on Paper 3, 7136/3. The multiple choice and extended case study paper, and the one students most often underprepare for.
Examining across 9EC01, 9EC02 and 9EC03. Theme structure, data response and the synoptic paper, each with its own demands.
Examining experience across OCR and Cambridge International IGCSE Economics, so students on either route are taught to the right criteria.
Examining experience
I have taught Economics since 2007 and have been at Brampton College since 2014, where I am now Head of Economics. I have examined since 2008 — Pure Maths and Economics both, and Economics today — and have been a Senior Examiner for around ten of those years, working as a team leader across boards. That is the perspective a student gets in every lesson.

The things parents and students ask before the first lesson. If yours is not here, email me.
Not usually, but it depends when. Starting in the autumn of Year 13 gives us a full run at exam technique, which is where most of the quick gains are. I do not take on new Year 13 students in March, because that is too close to the exams for me to make a real difference and I would rather say so than take the money.
Whatever the student needs. Most come with the content broadly in place and marks going missing on application, analysis or evaluation, so we work there. If there is a genuine gap in the economics, we fill it.
That is a large part of what I do. Structure, how much time to give each section, where the evaluation marks actually sit, and how to reach a judgement that a marker can credit rather than one that just restates the argument.
Yes, usually exam style questions. Written work comes back marked against the real criteria with the reason for every mark explained, which is the part students tend to find most useful.
Weekly suits most A Level students during term. Some book more intensively in the run up to mocks or the summer series. There is no minimum commitment either way.
Tell me the board, the year group and the current grade. I will be straight with you about whether I can help.
Three details and I will come back to you today.
